Some time back in the 1800's someone once said, "The more things change the more they stay the same", and insofar as jewelry is concerned they were 100% correct. Those words make up what is today being called a proverb, and French novelist Jean Baptiste Alphonse Karr, is credited with being its author. If someone told me that he had uttered those words while watching his wife don a necklace, I for one would not be surprised. To my mind he could have been reflecting on the fact that their earliest ancestors also wore necklaces. Unlike his wife's version however, those earlier necklaces were probably Made From shells or the teeth of some animal.
Jewelry is defined basically as adornments. They are worn on one's person, usually to enhance their appearance, and come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Jewelry will come in the form of necklaces, bracelets, earrings, chains, anklets, rings and brooches among other things. Today you will rarely come across an individual who is not wearing at least one item of jewelry. This is the case from senior citizen right down to toddler. The jewelry they sport is worn anywhere from head to toe, and in between, literally.
On a whole jewelry is expensive, and like most things tend to last longer if given some degree of care. There are some pieces of jewelry, which are built quite sturdy and can stand up to rough handling and treatment. There are also other items of jewelry, which are rather fragile and thus have to be handled with far more care. The fact of the matter is that there is only one way that jewelry should be treated, and that is properly.
Treating your jewelry properly or caring for them requires a multi-faceted approach. Keeping them clean is one part of this strategy. Cleaning them yourself or having them professionally cleaned is essential. Dirty jewels will lose their luster and this detracts from their beauty. Another aspect of jewelry care is their handling. Being gentle with them will not hurt them, while rough handling and treatment may damage them, necessitating costly repairs. Sleeping in jewelry is a practice that is best avoided.
The storage of jewelry, while not usually given the appreciation it deserves, is really a vital part of the jewelry care routine. If properly stored when not being worn they will be less prone to damage. One way the storage of jewelry can make a difference is that if they are housed at one central point you won't have to tear down the house to find them when they're needed. Also coming into play is the question of space. Each item of jewelry purchased will come in its own box, some of which can be quite bulky. If one has twenty pieces of jewelry that would mean a lot of space for all twenty boxes. Another way storage impacts on jewelry is that it helps to preserve them. Plunking down twenty pairs of earrings and four necklaces on your dresser or in a tray there will not do. Just as a motorcar will deteriorate much faster if left outside, as against being housed in a garage when not in use, it is the same with jewelry. Instead of a garage for the jewelry however, there is what is called a Jewelry Armoire.
Arguably the best and easiest way of addressing all the above concerns is the use of jewelry armoires. A jewelry armoire is a piece of furniture specially constructed for the housing or storage of jewelry.
