In Our Bedroom, After the War $17.83 In Our Bedroom After the War may prove that Torquil Campbell would be better off orchestrating Broadway show tunes instead of playing the part of an indie pop frontman. The titular song that ends Stars' fourth album is a heavily layered theatrical production laced with birds singing and bells ringing as Campbell's relationship culminates with a choir of voices and a massive symphonic crescendo. Campbell and crew are striving for a bigger-is-better formula, watering down the majority of their rock sensibilities with heavily layered chamber pop and this makes for a mixed bag. While some of Stars' best songs appear on this record, others are performed with such an overstated bravado that it renders them too sour to digest. "Personal" is a character-driven melodramatic ditty that chronicles a protagonist who places a newspaper ad and is stood up because she is too obese. Two schmaltzy piano ballads feature Campbell delivering his best imitation of Morrissey covering Elton John, in a manner of campy crooning that could easily be interpreted as pomposity. With the exception of those decadent stinkers, and a few mediocre numbers, Campbell and Amy Milan churn out some of their best work and harmonize soothingly throughout. One of their most instantly catchy singles "Take Me to the Riot" capitalizes on a snappy hook vaguely reminiscent of Ned's Atomic Dustbin's "Grey Cell Green," and sits well alongside the candy-covered Rhodes and orchestral flavored breakbeat of "My Favorite Book," which could fit on a greatest-hits record by the Cardigans. The themes of sweet, sweet lost heartbreak are still evident, and the enhanced sheen makes the material sound more like contemporary easy listening music than ever. Since the group is on the Arts & Crafts label (home to Broken Social Scene), they can still be described as indie, but they're just barely holding on to that credibility. While it wouldn't be surprising to hear Set Yourself on Fire while shopping at Urban Outfitters, this album seems ideal for The Gap. As a whole, the band sounds tighter than ever, and if they continue down this road, and keep inflating their production like a balloon, there's a danger that they could easily go pop. Until then, keep your head up, there's no need to reach into their back catalog just yet. Vanity Is Forever $11.87 The continuing 21st century indie rock fascination with the slick, studio rock of the 1980s is more than evident at the start of Crayon Fields' bandleader Geoffrey O'Connor's Vanity Is Forever, and had the title referred to Prince's one-time paramour, that would seem even more appropriate. However, as the album's cover art more than clearly indicates, the smooth synth flow and light funk evident on the softly sung "So Sorry" is more Bryan Ferry-goes-yacht rock-plus-beardo-disco. It's music to feel elegantly melancholy and groovy to, and it's brilliant, a kind of a full plunge where other artists appear to be all too apologetic for the approach. Vanity Is Forever maintains this same general feeling throughout its 12 songs, often feeling as if it's set in a coffee house on an easygoing ocean liner being filmed for a video in 1984. At points, as on songs like "Soon," the feeling is more of a keyboard-heavy kind of "perfect guitar pop," designed for a vision of indie-as-such with other roots. Thus, "Whatever Leads Me to You" has a queasy violin break that sounds like it could have escaped from a pop art release on El Records from the mid-'80s, even as the easygoing funk and synth-fadeouts continue, while the gentle opening of "Expensive," with its distant keyboard swirl and soft, acoustic guitar has its own sweet, distinct logic. O'Connor's expressions of romantic doubt and carrying on in the face of time work stylistically in the Ferry vein as well, and the lyric to "Proud," with its dessert similes and memories of hands on shirts and more, certainly fills the "look back with ambivalent regret" bill that the older musician's made his own -- but O'Connor's singing is more of a gentle purr and sighed whisper, a lack of stereotypical strength that plays well against the fuller arrangements. If a song like "Things I Shouldn't Do" is almost a rewrite of the Cars' "Drive" at the start -- and compared to the Paradise Motel's remake of that song, it's not a reinvention by any means -- it's handled with aplomb, turning into a sweetly hesitant duet vocally while the crisp drum hits, synth bass, and more turn it into something constantly both now and then in equal measure. ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Jessica Venables - Cello, Vocals; Ben Montero - Bass; Esther Edquist - Vocals; Felicity Cripps - Vocals; Guy Blackman - Piano; Jono Edmonds - Percussion; Julian Patterson - Drums; |

Imperial Bedroom $11.14 Having gotten country out of his system with Almost Blue, Elvis Costello returned to pop music with Imperial Bedroom -- and it was pop in the classic, Tin Pan Alley sense. Costello chose to hire Geoff Emerick, who engineered all of the Beatles' most ambitious records, to produce Imperial Bedroom, which indicates what it sounds like -- it's traditional pop with a post-Sgt. Pepper production. Essentially, the songs on Imperial Bedroom are an extension of Costello's jazz and pop infatuations on Trust. Costello's music is complex and intricate, yet it flows so smoothly, it's easy to miss the bitter, brutal lyrics. The interweaving layers of "Beyond Belief" and the whirlwind intro are the most overtly dark sounds on the record, with most of the album given over to the orchestrated, melancholy torch songs and pop singles. Never once do Costello & the Attractions deliver a rock & roll song -- the album is all about sonic detail, from the accordion on "The Long Honeymoon" to the lilting strings on "Town Cryer." Of course, the detail and the ornate arrangements immediately peg Imperial Bedroom as Costello's most ambitious album, but that doesn't mean it's his absolute masterpiece. Imperial Bedroom remains one of Costello's essential records because it is the culmination of his ambitions and desires -- it's where he proves that he can play with the big boys, both as a songwriter and a record-maker. It may not have been a commercial blockbuster, but it certainly earned the respect of legions of musicians and critics who would have previously disdained such a punk rocker.
