Price Comparison websites are websites that compare products to find the lowest price for the consumer. They have received positive press coverage. The giants eBay and Yahoo own some price comparison websites!. I will in this article explain why they do not always work. Nothing is more potent than language, and I hope the words in this article will save you money.
Price comparison websites list bathroom goods (among others) in a list format that allows the consumer to compare several prices on one web page for the same item. The prices all come from different retailers operating under free market conditions selling that same item. As many consumers now pay thousands of pounds for new bathroom goods, price comparisons should have a key role. However, increasingly clever retailers are finding ways to avoid price comparisons. I will explain how they are doing that in this article.
Retailers avoid price comparisons by product re-branding, hiding VAT, surreptitiously adding delivery charges, and disingenuously selling copies of branded products. This avoidance is done to increase prices to the consumer. I will illustrate product re-branding in the free market; re-branding is by far the commonest and most egregious means by which consumers are overcharged and price comparison websites rendered impotent.
I have no connection with the following parties at all, and their names are shown just to show a point about how the intent of price comparison methods is circumnavigated by clever retailers.
The national group called Wolseley owns Bathstore.com; it has over a hundred and fifty real stores nationwide and a large website. Bathstore sells Crosswater goods (an imported line) but Bathstore renames the Crosswater goods to avoid price comparisons.
This is one example of how they do it. Hey Joe is one product name within the Crosswater colllection and sold to retailers nationwide including Bathstore. If I look at Boundary Bathrooms, a small retailer I picked at random (it has one store versus the 150 from Bathstore), I see the product sold for 156 pounds.
The same product is sold at Bathstore for 219 pounds under the new name Idea. The Bathstore customer is paying much more for the same product due to re-branding (it is not sold as Crosswater). The Bathstore customer has been misled to paying over 40% more for the same item, with price comparison methods being ineffective.
This one simple example is one of thousands and just printed here for proof of the practice. I could have picked almost any retailers at random to show this point, and my choice was entirely random, and driven by the fact that Bathstore is a large British national company.
Re-branding is so easy in bathroom retail because many bathroom goods Are Made in China. The actual original manufacturer name does not show anywhere anyway. Often the manufacturer will supply several importers and each of them is able to re-brand the product. The product can then be re-branded again by the retailer to avoid price comparisons.
If that were not enough to confuse the honest consumer just looking for the best price, the retailer has plenty more swindles in his bag of swindles to get the retail prices increased without the consumer knowing that he will be swindled.
Another way retailers avoid price comparisons is to exclude VAT in advertisements. The VAT is then added at the end of the transaction. Price comparison sites require VAT to be shown in the prices, but sometimes that condition is breached. I know of one case in which a retailer hid VAT in major price comparison websites. Since VAT is 17.5%, this is an important amount of money to hide for the retailer.
Hiding delivery charges are another means by which retailers can avoid price comparisons. Some retailers excessively charge delivery, and then lower the retail cost of the goods. Therefore, the total amount payable is inflated despite a lower retail cost. Advertisements appear attractive until you see the final charge. Delivery charges can be 100 pounds or more for one shipment.
Retailers also can include illegal re-stocking charges to avoid genuine like for like comparisons. These charges can be 25% and they negate the customer's legal right to get a full refund within a cooling off period. Such charges are illegal under Distance Selling Regulations. So a price may appear cheaper until the full contract of sale is examined to show hidden charges in the form of re-stocking charges.
A variation on importer and retailer re-branding is used the large copying market. In China, many companies will copy an existing design. This has infamously happened on Clearwater baths. The market is awash with copies. Sometimes the original name Clearwater will be used when the bath is not Clearwater at all. Clearwater is one of the strongest brand names in the European Union for freestanding acrylic baths; it exports from the UK to 24 countries including the USA. Its name attracted the attention of the copiers in China. Clearwater responded by adding an official certificate for genuine Clearwater baths.
To find the best prices, you have to be product wise and like everything else read the written words in articles like this, and make your judgements. Fundamentally, you should introspectively just ask one question: "Is the product cost really worth that much money to me?" Be careful of clever advertisements, read the contracts, and ask when unsure. One question asked can save you a lot of heart and headache.
This article is written by Trevor Oakley. He is the managing director of Merrows Bathrooms. Merrows has traded for four years selling hundreds of thousands of pounds of quality goods. He also manages the Sayworth website. That site is about consumer advice and it has buying tips.

Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Maker List Price: $174.99 Sale Price: $107.51 Used From: $49.95 |
|
Panasonic SD-YD250 Automatic Bread Bakery with 4 Baking Modes Providing myriad options, this automatic bread maker embodies the marvels of 21st century electronic convenience and choice. Yes, it mixes, kneads, rises, and bakes bread in three loaf sizes up to 2-1/2 pounds. But its digital controls go much further, offering settings for white, whole wheat, multigrain, and French (crisp crust, open texture) breads, each made according to what's best for that particular style. Other settings permit rapid baking and baking sandwich bread with a soft crust. For raisin (or other dried-fruit) bread, a beeper signals when to add the fruit so it's not crushed during kneading. Crust color--dark or light--can be selected as well. The machine automatically adds yeast at the proper time from a dispenser on the unit's lid. It also bakes non-yeast, quick breads-- like banana and gingerbread--and sweet cakes. And it mixes, kneads, and rises doughs for pizza, focaccia, croissants, and other pastries without baking them. A timer permits the machine to be programmed up to 13 hours in advance so fresh bread or cake is available for breakfast or dinner. For cleanup convenience, the baking pan is nonstick. Clad in metal and packing 550 watts of power, the machine measures 14 inches wide, 13.5 inches high, and 9 inches deep. Its instruction booklet is exceptionally easy to understand and includes recipes for 40 breads and doughs along with an insightful guide to baking basics and illustrated tips for making pastries. --Fred Brack From the Manufacturer There's nothing quite like the warm aroma of freshly baked homemade bread from the oven. With the help of this user-friendly bread machine, even those with a busy, on-the-go schedule can enjoy this simple pleasure--without the time-consuming hard work normally associated with baking bread. Just add ingredients, press a few buttons, and it takes care of the rest. Soft-touch control panel with LCD digital display and 13-hour preset timer. Easily Bake Bread or Create Dough Bake loaves of white or whole wheat bread for slicing and slathering with butter and jam or for making sandwiches. Create croissant or pizza dough for shaping by hand and baking in the oven. Make the classic fruitcake to serve during the holidays. From basic recipes to custom creations, the bread machine produces delicious results--and without the additives and preservatives found in store-bought brands. A recipe book with over 50 original bread and dough recipes comes included. Customizable Settings The unit's top-access, soft-touch, push-button control panel with an LCD digital display helps ensure easy programming. Choose from three different loaf sizes (medium, large, or extra large) and the crust color (light, medium, or dark). It also offers up to six different types of bread or dough options--Basic, Whole Wheat, Multi-Grain, French, Pizza, and Cake. Baking modes include Bake Only (great for fruitcakes, gingerbread, and teacakes); Rapid Bake (reduces the baking time of basic and whole-wheat breads); Raisin (offers an audible beep to signal when to add raisins, dried fruits, or nuts into the dough); and Sandwich (produces bread with a soft crust). Dough modes include Pizza, Rolls, and Raisin Dough. Best of all, the appliance comes equipped with a digital timer, which can be set up to 13 hours in advance--great for waking up to the smell of freshly baked bread. Or set the timer before leaving for work in the morning so that a warm loaf will be ready and waiting after a long day at the office. Simply slice it up and serve with dinner. Choose from 3 loaf sizes and 3 crust shades from light to dark. Healthy and Nutritious Baking bread at home allows for ultimate control over the finished product. By using only the freshest ingredients and making choices between a variety of options, homemade bread can be an important part of a well-balanced diet--for both young and older family members alike. High in fiber and low in fat, bread contains a wealth of beneficial components. It provides complex carbohydrates needed for energy, protein for strong muscles, and vitamins and minerals, including calcium and iron for healthy bones and teeth. Add nutrient-rich eggs to the recipe or choose whole-grain flour for an extra boost of fiber, iron, vitamins, and minerals. Mixing in nuts and dried fruits not only add to the pleasing consistency and taste of the finished product, but they're also another way to add to the overall health factor. Yeast dispenser automatically adds yeast at optimal time to ensure perfect results. Ultimate Convenience Thoughtfully designed, the bread machine also supplies a YeastPro automatic yeast dispenser. Just add a measured amount of yeast into the holder on the unit's lid, and the machine will automatically dispense the yeast in with the other ingredients at the perfect time for optimal results. Even more, the unit's inner bake pan comes fitted with a wire handle (use an oven mitt when hot) for easily removing it from the appliance when the bread has finished baking. The pan's nonstick coating allows baked bread to slide easily out of the pan onto a cutting board or a wire rack to fully cool for easier slicing. Inner bake pan offers built-in handle and nonstick coating for effortless bread removal. Unique Design for Professional Results Unlike other bread machines, the unit does not offer a viewing window. The absence of a viewing window allows a more even reflection of heat inside the unit, which offers the following three advantages: excellent crust, good rising, and even color. The machine also benefits from a unique temperature-control program that automatically optimizes the temperatures and times for each stage of the process. Its comprehensive microprocessor program makes slight adjustments as needed to ensure perfectly baked bread regardless of conditions like climate and room temperature. Panasonic delivers excellent results regardless of different types of ingredients used, different seasons, and different room temperatures. In addition to the recipe book, accessories include a measuring spoon, a measuring cup, and a kneading blade that fits onto the base of the inner pan for thoroughly mixing ingredients. Other highlights include a top-loading locking lid, a handy indicator light to show when the baking or dough cycle has completed, a safety fuse for peace of mind, and power-interruption protection that allows the baking process to resume even when there's an interruption in power for approximately 10 minutes or less. All parts should be hand washed only. The small appliance comes in a compact design that fits neatly on the kitchen countertop. Keep it out for everyday use or store it on a shelf or in the pantry when finished. Awarded the Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval, the 550-watt bread machine measures 13-3/8 by 9-1/16 by 14 inches, weighs about 15 pounds, and carries a one-year limited warranty. Looney Tunes - Golden Collection List Price: $64.98 Sale Price: $25.99 Used From: $20.45 |

LOONEY TUNES:GOLDEN COLLECTION VOL 1 - DVD Movie For years, animation buffs have waited impatiently for the Warner Bros. cartoons to appear on DVD. The Warner shorts never commanded the budgets and prestige of the Disney and MGM films, and won fewer Oscars than they deserved. But decades after the best ones were created, they remain the quintessential Hollywood cartoons: brash, fast-paced, aggressively funny and uniquely American. Virtually everyone in the U.S. under the age of 60 grew up on these films, in theaters and on TV. The 56 cartoons in the set (out of a studio output of over 1,000) were transferred from good prints--which means the viewer can see dust, scratches, and occasional mistakes by the cel painters. The films are all presented uncut, in defiance of the killjoys who have insisted on censoring alleged "violence" in the versions shown on television. Warner Bros. is obviously testing consumer response with this set. Although the erratic selection includes many classics, purists will argue (correctly) that it offers neither a fair representation of the directors' oeuvres, nor anything approaching a coherent history of the characters or studio style. (Nearly half the films were directed by Chuck Jones; only three are by Bob Clampett, and there's nothing by Tex Avery or Frank Tashlin.) But it seems petty to carp about omissions and biases when the discs offer excellent, uncensored prints of some of the funniest films ever made in the U.S.--or anywhere else. (Rated G, suitable for all ages: cartoon violence) --Charles Solomon |

Bob Dylan - Don't Look Back (1965 Tour Deluxe Edition) List Price: $29.95 Sale Price: $14.99 Used From: $8.43 |
|
Both a classic documentary and a vital pop-cultural artifact, D.A. Pennebaker's portrait of Bob Dylan captures the seminal singer-songwriter on the cusp of his transformation from folk prophet to rock trendsetter. Shot during Dylan's 1965 British concert tour, Don't Look Back employs an edgy vérité style that was, and is, a snug fit with the artist's own consciously rough-hewn persona. Its handheld black-and-white images and often-gritty London backdrops suggest cinematic extensions of the archetypal monochrome portraits that graced Dylan's career-making early-'60s album jackets. Pennebaker's access to the legendarily private troubadour enables us to witness Dylan's shifting moods as he performs, relaxes with his entourage (including then lover Joan Baez, road manager Bob Neuwirth, and poker-faced manager Albert Grossman), and jousts with other musicians (notably Animals alumnus Alan Price and Scottish folksinger Donovan), fans, and press. It's a measurement of the filmmaker's acuity that the conversations are often as gripping as Dylan's solo performances. Grossman's machinations with British promoters, Baez's hip serenity, a grizzled British journalist's surrender to the fact of Dylan's artistry, and the artist's own taunting dismissal of a clueless sycophant are all absorbing. With the exception of the studio recording of "Subterranean Homesick Blues," the live performances (including five newly restored, complete audio tracks excised from the original film but included on the DVD version) are constrained by crude audio gear. Their urgency, however, is timeless, as is Pennebaker's film, a legitimate cornerstone for any serious rock video collection. --Sam Sutherland BOB DYLAN:DON'T LOOK BACK 65 TOUR DEL - DVD Movie |

Bolt (Three-Disc Edition w/ Standard DVD + Digital Copy + BD Live) [Blu-ray] List Price: $39.99 Sale Price: $21.99 Used From: $10.67 |

Bolt is a funny animated film about a dog who thinks he has superpowers. It is also a movie about friendship, perseverance, and the power of believing in oneself. Everyone knows that superheroes on television are not real, but super-dog Bolt (John Travolta) is a canine star who has been carefully raised to believe that he really possesses superpowers. Bolt is completely devoted to his human co-star Penny (Miley Cyrus), so when Penny is captured by the evil Dr. Calico (Malcolm McDowell) in their latest television episode and then Bolt accidentally gets loose in the real world, Bolt sets off on a journey to save her. Bolt is confounded when his super powers are suddenly ineffective, but inspiration strikes and Bolt quickly discovers the mysterious, power-stealing effects of Styrofoam packing peanuts. An encounter with alley cat Mittens (Susie Essman) gives Bolt some eye-opening lessons about being a real dog in the real world, while star-struck, ball-enclosed hamster Rhino (Mark Walton) revels in the opportunity to serve as Bolt's sidekick in the quest to rescue Penny. The trio traverses the United States from waffle house to waffle house on a hysterical quest to find Penny and prove that the relationship between Penny and Bolt is real. In the end, Bolt, Mittens, and Rhino learn that everyone is special in their own way and they discover the true power of believing in oneself and one's friends. Select theaters showed Bolt in Real-D 3-D which features some nice effects, but the film is probably equally enjoyable in the traditional format. A fun film with a nice message and a huge dose of cute, Bolt is good entertainment for the entire family. --Tami Horiuchi Stills from Bolt (Click for larger image) Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG•Format: Blu-Ray•Runtime: 97 minutes |

A Bug's Life [Blu-ray] List Price: $39.99 Sale Price: $21.00 Used From: $17.25 |

There was such a magic on the screen in 1995 when the people at Pixar came up with the first fully computer-animated film, Toy Story. Their second feature film, A Bug's Life, may miss the bull's-eye but Pixar's target is so lofty, it's hard to find the film anything less than irresistible. Brighter and more colorful than the other animated insect movie of 1998 (Antz), A Bug's Life is the sweetly told story of Flik (voiced by David Foley), an ant searching for better ways to be a bug. His colony unfortunately revolves around feeding and fearing the local grasshoppers (lead by Hopper, voiced with gleeful menace by Kevin Spacey). When Flik accidentally destroys the seasonal food supply for the grasshoppers he decides to look for help ("We need bigger bugs!"). The ants, led by Princess Atta (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), are eager to dispose of the troublesome Flik. Yet he finds help--a hearty bunch of bug warriors--and brings them back to the colony. Unfortunately they are just traveling performers afraid of conflict. As with Toy Story, the ensemble of creatures and voices is remarkable and often inspired. Highlights include wiseacre comedian Denis Leary as an un-ladylike ladybug, Joe Ranft as the German-accented caterpillar, David Hyde Pierce as a stick bug, and Michael McShane as a pair of unintelligible pillbugs. The scene-stealer is Atta's squeaky-voiced sister, baby Dot (Hayden Panettiere), who has a big sweet spot for Flik. More gentle and kid-friendly than Antz, A Bug Life's still has some good suspense and a wonderful demise of the villain. However, the film--a giant worldwide hit--will be remembered for its most creative touch: "outtakes" over the end credits à la many live-action comedy films. These dozen or so scenes (both "editions" of outtakes are contained here) are brilliant and deserve a special place in film history right along with 1998's other most talked-about sequence: the opening Normandy invasion in Saving Private Ryan. The video also contains Pixar's delightful Oscar-winning short, Geri's Game. Box art varies. --Doug Thomas Features include: •MPAA Rating: G•Format: Blu-Ray•Runtime: 95 minutes |

How The Grinch Stole Christmas [VHS] List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $2.89 Used From: $0.01 |
|
Under a thick carpet of green-dyed yak fur and wonderfully expressive Rick Baker makeup, Jim Carrey is up to all of his old tricks (and some nifty new ones) in this live-action movie of Dr. Seuss's holiday classic. He commands the title role with equal parts madness, mayhem, pathos, and improvisational genius, channeling Grinchness through his own screen persona so smoothly that fans of both Carrey and Dr. Seuss will be thoroughly satisfied. Adding to the fun is a perfectly pitched back-story sequence (accompanied by Anthony Hopkins's narration) that explains how the Grinch came to hate Christmas, with a heart "two sizes too small." Ron Howard proves a fine choice for the director's chair with a keen balance of comedy, sentiment, and light-hearted Seussian whimsy. Production designer Michael Corenblith gloriously realizes the wackiness of Whoville architecture, and his rendition of the Grinch's Mt. Crumpit lair is a marvel of cartoonish, subterranean grime. Then there's Cindy Lou Who (Taylor Momsen), the thoughtful imp who rallies her village to recapture the pure spirit of Christmas and melts the gift-stealing Grinch's cold, cold heart. You've even got a dog (the Grinch's good-natured mongrel, Max) who's been perfectly cast, so what's not to like about this dazzling yuletide movie? The production gets a bit overwhelmed by its own ambition, and the citizens of Whoville (including Jeffrey Tambor, Christine Baranski, Molly Shannon, and Bill Irwin) pale in comparison to Carrey's inspired lunacy, but who cares? If a movie can unleash Jim Carrey at his finest, revamp the Grinch story, and still pay tribute to the legacy of Dr. Seuss, you can bet it qualifies as rousing entertainment. The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (Two-Disc Special Edition) List Price: $32.99 Sale Price: $9.77 Used From: $8.79 |
|
Studio: Uni Dist Corp. (summit) Release Date: 12/04/2010 Rating: Pg13 The third installment of Stephenie Meyer's blockbuster vampire series is its most action packed, both in terms of fight scenes and human-vampire-werewolf lovin'. In Eclipse, the vampiric Cullen clan and the werewolves--their sworn enemies--unite against an army of "newborn" vampires, whose remnants of human blood in their veins makes them stronger and more uncontrollable, causing a string of murders in the Seattle area. They've been created by the vengeful vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard, taking over for Rachelle Lefevre), still keen on destroying human Bella (Kristen Stewart). Thus, Bella is under careful watch, and her undead love Edward (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf best friend Jacob (Taylor Lautner) spend a lot of time arguing over who is the better man for her. (In one hilarious scene where Bella's freezing and only Jacob has the lupine body heat to warm her, he looks over at Edward and cracks, "I am hotter than you." Go Team Jacob!) But there's more at the heart of the triangle than love: Bella, against Edward's warnings, doesn't want to grow older than him and would willingly give up contact with her parents, the chance to grow old with children, and more to be turned into a bloodthirsty vampire. (Jacob's trump card is that Bella wouldn't have to give up her mortality to be with him.) But the unfolding of this love triangle is even clumsier than it was on the page; you're never really convinced Bella has romantic feelings for Jacob, even during their climactic kiss on top of the mountain. This is likely to confuse non-readers of the book series, as Stewart emotes nothing that intones there's a real competition here (clearly, she's Team Edward). Pattinson, on the other hand, appears to have overcome his awkwardness to become a much cooler Edward; Howard, while missing Lefevre's mischief as Victoria, brings her own touch of soft-spoken manipulation; and Billy Burke, as Bella's father Charlie, continues to steal every scene he's in. The other Cullens also get far more play here, notably Rosalie (Nikki Reed), whose revealing back story is touching and tragic, and Jasper (Jackson Rathbone), who trains everyone in combat and who, halfway through the movie, adopts a sudden Southern accent that he didn't have before, once it's revealed he was a Confederate soldier (on a side note, it's mentioned in the books that Jasper can calm the emotions of others, but that trait isn't used in the movie). The climactic fight scene is well staged by director David Slade (30 Days of Night, Hard Candy); the violence, while not bloody, is still more abundant and disturbing than in the previous films; and the sex, while not actually happening between anyone (yet), is certainly on everyone's mind (but Edward wants to get married first). It seems the characters, and the series, are growing up. --Ellen A. Kim |

The Price of Heaven - $5.99 Filmed on location in South Carolina, The Price of Heaven represents one of the forays into the realm of made-for-TV movies by celebrated director Peter Bogdanovich. The story takes place in the early 1950s, as Korean war hero Jerry Shand (Grant Show) returns to his Southern hometown. Aspiring to medical school, Jerry lands a low-paying but steady job selling funeral insurance to the local black community. When ordered to collect back premium payments from the elderly and impoverished Vesta Battle (Cicely Tyson in a virtual reprise of her "Miss Jane Pittman" characterization), Jerry is prevented from doing so by his newly awakened compassion and social consciousness--thereby placing his job, and his entire future as a "good Southerner", in jeopardy. On a more personal level, Jerry is torn between love for his childhood sweetheart, whose family runs a local laundry, and lust for the predatory daughter of a wealthy cotton-mill owner (shades of Bette Davis!) Based on a novella by Allan Gurganus and first telecast over the CBS network on August 17, 1997, The Price of Heaven has since been shown on cable TV under the title Blessed Assurance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |
