The Austin Healey Sprite had so many nicknames it is nearly hard to keep track of them all. This was the original bike shed car. The ultra low cost and size of this sports car was made so a chap could just store it in their bike shed out back of the house and drive it occasionally. This car was also dubbed the first modern affordable sports car.
This car was first seen by the public on May 20 1958, just before at the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. This affordable little car went on sale for 669 British sterling pounds or about $1500 USD at the time. It was originally designed to have movable headlights on the bonnet that would rotate up to give it a sleek appearance during the day. Because of weight and price concerns, this was removed and the headlights were made to be stationary, which lead to the famous bugeye or frogeye look, and nicknames.
This unique looking, 2 seater sports car took both England and America by storm because of its low price and it was fun to drive. The low cost was mainly contributed to the parts that made up the car. While the body was original, that was the only part made specific for this car.
The power plant of the car was originally an Austin A-series engine with a displacement of 948cc. It produced 43 bhp at 5200 rpm. The code of the engine was 9CC. Both the Austin A35 and the Morris Minor 1000 had this same engine, with a few modifications. The Austin Healey's version had a set of larger win 1 1/8" SU carburetors that supplied the fuel.
The rack and pinion steering was the exact same that was used in the Morris Minor 1000. The rest of the suspension parts were taken from the BMC's parts bin, which significantly reduced the cost of manufacturing this car.
The body and frame work was a first of a kind for a British sports car. This was the very first unibody or monocoque, as the British put it, which was used on such a small car. This design was inspired by the much larger Jaguar D-Type.
To make the car more structurally sound, the bonnet and front fenders was a one piece design that was securely attached to the firewall. Another feature that was unique to the bugeye was that no trunk lid was available. This made the rear of the car stronger and reduced the cars flexing when in motion. To access the rear compartment, the driver would have to lean his seat forward.
What would appear today as an aerodynamic feature was actually a cost saving feature back when this car was introduced in 1958, this was the absence of exterior door handles. For access to the car, the driver and passenger could either reach inside and use the interior handle or just climb over the car door.
This first Austin Healy Sprite was the Mark I model. There were a total of 48,987 cars of this model produced from 1958 until 1961. The top speed was only 82.9mph, but getting there was fun.

Fast Food Nation List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $6.41 Used From: $3.24 |

FAST FOOD NATION - DVD Movie If you're still eating that fast-food burger after watching Super Size Me, you might not feel too hungry after watching Fast Food Nation, a fictionalized feature based on Eric Schlosser's bestselling nonfiction expose. Director Richard Linklater, who cowrote the screenplay with Schlosser, guides a topnotch ensemble cast through a peek behind the veil of how that Big Mac is born. Much of the film focuses on the illegal immigrants who work in the loosely regulated meat-packing industry, and actors including the luminous Catalina Sandino Moreno (Maria Full of Grace), who plays a desperate but outraged laborer. Greg Kinnear also delivers a spot-on performance as a fast-food chain marketing manager, trying frantically to discover the source of stomach-turning contamination in the company's meat. Stories are woven in unexpected ways, and cameos by the likes of Kris Kristofferson, Patricia Arquette, and especially Bruce Willis keep the narrative fresh. The film has a point of view, but thanks to Linklater's deft touch, is never didactic. As Willis's character slyly says, "Most people don't like to be told what's best for them." Agreed, yet Fast Food Nation likely will help the viewer be more conscious of what's on the end of that fork. --A.T. The Simpsons Movie (Full Screen Edition) List Price: $14.98 Sale Price: $1.88 Used From: $0.01 |
|
Features include: •MPAA Rating: PG-13•Format: DVD•Runtime: 87 minutes The Simpsons had already ruled TV land for many years by the time they finally attempted to conquer the movie world as well. It was never any big secret that a Simpsons movie was in the works: Fox registered the domain name "Simpsonsmovie.com" in 1997, a full nine years before the film was finally greenlighted. When creator/producer Matt Groening's creation finally made it to the big screen in 2007, it only turned out to be the biggest hit of the summer, raking in over $100 million gross in box-office receipts in its first week, before heading on to do over $500 million worldwide, proving that the best joke in the movie was actually played on the audience: "Why pay for something when you can see it for free?" asks Homer at the movie's start. Naturally, all the trouble starts with him. When he adopts a pig ("Sir Oinks-A-Lot") destined for Krusty's slaughterhouse, it triggers an environmental catastrophe, forcing the government to seal Springfield into a dome and destroy the city. While the family manages to escape and flee to Alaska, they eventually decide to return and help save the city in more-or-less classic Simpson fashion. As Homer's joke about the audience shows, Groening and producer Al Jean are keenly aware that their franchise is first and foremost a TV show. Maybe a little too aware, as the movie fails to ever rise above anything more than an extended episode, and not even one of its best episodes at that. True, there are plenty of good jokes; the animation has been kicked up a notch to be particularly sharp and detailed; and there are some truly memorable moments such as Bart's nude skateboard ride and the "Spider-Pig" song. But when the film finally materialized, the payoff for long years of anticipation turned out to be small as the movie failed to live up to its potential; it's amusing but not truly funny. The Simpsons Movie leaves the impression that maybe the show's writers and producers had already spent their best ideas on the best years of the TV show. Had it been made years earlier well, we can only wonder what could have been. --Daniel Vancini Get to Know The Simpsons "Oh, so they have internet on computers now!" -- Homer Simpson "I'd like to visit that Long Island Place, if only it were real." -- Marge Simpson (drinking a Long Island Iced Tea) "Aren't we forgetting the true meaning of Christmas? The Rack (Remastered) $16.58 Wounded and weakened in Korean prison camps, GIs descend from the plane that returned them to U.S. soil. It is a time of tearful family reunions. A time of uncertainty about how to help traumatized men. And a time of reckoning: Capt. Edward W. Hall Jr., a silver-star hero and ex-POW, faces trial for collaboration with the enemy. Paul Newman's richly complex portrayal of Hall sets the tone of acting excellence found throughout The Rack. How much can a POW be expected to endure before breaking? Should his own past and emotional vulnerabilities be weighed against the miltary's policy of name, rank and serial number? The issues remain timelessly relevant in this probing courtroom drama adapted from a Rod Serling teleplay. |

The Rack (DVD) $19.03 The Korean conflict of the early `50s saw widespread use of psychological torture by the North Korean communists on enemy prisoners of war. That young American GIs cracked under this brainwashing at higher rates than the troops of our allies led to much soul searching within the military and the nation during that era. In Hollywood, this was most famously reflected in THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE (1962), and lesser-known films like TIME LIMIT (1955) and THE RACK. The failure of all three films at the box office suggests that the public didn`t care to be reminded of this painful issue. Paul Newman stars as Captain Edward W. Hall Jr., a career soldier being tried by a military court for collaborating with the enemy. As the son of a highly distinguished career officer (Walter Pidgeon), and with a brother who had been killed in the war, he is especially tormented by the accusations which have been brought against him. Although reluctant to take the case, Major Sam Moulton (Wendell Corey) elicits incriminating testimony from Hall, comparing him unfavorably with soldiers like Captain John Miller (Lee Marvin), who were able to withstand similar punishment. But defending attorney Lt. Colonel Frank Wasnick (Edmond O`Brien), makes the case that this new type of torture is a new and barely understood weapon, to which some will be more innately immune than others. |

The Man Who Saved Christmas [DVD/CD] $5.96 Jason Alexander stars as fabled toy manufacturer, A.C. Gilbert in this Capraesque TV movie. An overachiever since his school days, Gilbert surprises his stern father (Ed Asner) by forsaking a career in medicine to pursue an entirely different business. Creating the now legendary Erector Set, A.C. sets up his own toy company in 1913, an enterprise which is raking in millions within two years. But with America's entry into WWI, the U.S. government prevails upon Gilbert to convert his factory into a munitions plant. Though at heart a pacifist, Gilbert agrees to do so, secure in the belief that he will be able to return to toys once the hostilities have ceased. Alas, the Government has other plans. At their behest, Gilbert reluctantly mounts a "Buy Bonds, Not Toys" campaign designed to divert the money normally spent on Christmas gifts to the war effort. Is this the end of Christmastime as millions of children know it, or will Gilbert be able to salvage both the holiday and the spirit of giving? The Man Who Saved Christmas debuted December 15, 2002, on CBS. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Hart's War [2 Discs] [Blu-ray/DVD] $13.65 Based on the novel by John Katzenbach, author of Just Cause (1995), this prison camp drama combines elements of A Soldier's Story (1984) and the classic Stalag 17 (1953). Colin Farrell stars as Lt. Tommy Hart, a second-year Harvard Law School student who enlists to fight in World War II but ends up being taken prisoner by the Germans. When a murder at the Nazi-run Stalag Luft 13 leaves a black Tuskegee airman named Lt. Lincoln Scott (Terrence Dashon Howard) accused of the crime, high-ranking prisoner (and fourth-generation war hero) Col. William McNamara (Bruce Willis) persuades camp commandant Col. Werner Visser (Marcel Iures) to allow the prisoners to hold their own trial. Hart is recruited to defend his fellow officer, but as he reluctantly investigates, he discovers that not all of his fellow allied soldiers are fighting the same war and that his "client" may well have been framed. In the meantime, it becomes apparent that McNamara is using events to mask his true intent, a mission to destroy a nearby munitions plant that he still intends to carry out despite his incarceration. Hart's War (2002) co-stars Vicellous Shannon, Cole Hauser, Rory Cochrane, and Jonathan Brandis. ~ Karl Williams, Rovi |
