CPR certification can save lives - we know that. If someone has a cardiac arrest and the bystanders do nothing the chances are the person will die. But if someone performs the kiss of life, they could still die!
Recent research published in the Journal of the American Medical Association suggests that patients who receive the kiss of life are not more likely to live than if someone performs chest compressions only. The study reviewed 4000 victims of cardiac arrest and investigated whether they had received CPR, what type i.e. from a non medical person or the EMT, how they fared and whether they lived. The conclusion was that chest compressions worked and were in fact more effective than CPR performed using both mouth to mouth and rescue breaths. Making people do mouth to mouth is costing lives and not just in the situations covered in the research. The fact is that people don't want to kiss strangers and this is putting them off learning vital life saving skills. Also when the general public do CPR they often get the rescue breath bit wrong anyway. So what can be done instead? The simple facts are:
- Way too many people die unnecessarily after suffering a cardiac arrest. It is estimated about 300,000 people die every year in the US alone- that number is unacceptable.
- The general public are afraid of infection and it appears that no amount of advertising is going to change their minds.
- Even if infection wasn't an issue people are worried about bad breath and kissing other people. It would be funny if it wasn't so sad.
- We need more people to learn basic life saving skills and obtain their CPR certification. So we need to take advantage of the recent research if it means more people not only gain these life saving skills but will actually use them on the streets of the USA.
So what does this mean? The new research and probably soon to be guidelines suggest that chest only compressions done correctly will save lives. You still need to learn how to do it properly but in the event of a tragedy doing something is Better Than nothing. Watch the video mentioned below to find out how easy it is to do CPR only using chest compressions. This works and it removes all requirement for kissing strangers. Now people there are no more excuses why everyone shouldn't become CPR certified today!
Get CPR Certification today. Or watch the video on continuous chest compression CPR for more information!

Bobby Bland Greatest Hits Vol. 2: The ABC-Dunhill/MCA Recordings List Price: $9.98 Sale Price: $5.39 Used From: $5.50 |
|
No Description AvailableNo Track Information AvailableMedia Type: CDArtist: BLAND,BOBBY BLUETitle: VOL. 2-GREATEST HITSStreet Release Date: 07/14/1998 Bobby Bland's uptown, brass-and-strings-drenched blues kept him on the charts long after gut-bucket kings such as Howlin' Wolf and Muddy Waters had dropped from black-radio airwaves. The artistic successes chronicled on this second volume of his greatest hits shouldn't come as a surprise, then, despite the frequent input of ultracommercial producer Steve Barri, who'd crafted AM hits for acts as diverse as the Grass Roots and the post-Motown Four Tops. Even with some accommodations to trends (the disco beat of "The Soul of a Man," chicken-scratching guitars here, there, and everywhere), Bland kept on being Bland, cutting country songs ("Today I Started Loving You Again") and blues standards ("Goin' Down Slow") and investing Dan Penn's "I Hate You" with a unique pungency. This disc performs a valuable service in lifting the veil from an often-overlooked period in the career of one of American music's most important interpretive singers. --Rickey Wright |

Who Can Save Us Now? $7.99 Twenty-two of today's most talented writers (and comics fans) unite in Who Can Save Us Now?, an anthology featuring brand-new superheroes equipped for the threats and challenges of the twenty-first century -- with a few supervillains thrown in for good measure. Edited and with contributions by Owen King (We're All in This Together) and John McNally (America's Report Card), Who Can Save Us Now? enriches the superhero canon immeasurably. With mutations stranger than the X-Men and with even more baggage than the Hulk, this next generation of superheroes is a far cry from your run-of-the-mill caped crusader. From the image-conscious and not-very-mysterious masked meathead who swoops in and sweeps the tough girl reporter off her feet; to the Meerkat, who overcomes his species' cute and cuddly image to become the resident hero in a small Midwestern city; to the Silverfish, "the creepy superhero," who fights crime while maintaining the slipperiest of identities; to Manna Man, who manipulates the minds of televangelists to serve his own righteous mission, these protectors (and in some cases antagonizers) of the innocent and the virtuous will delight literary enthusiasts and comic fans alike. With stunning illustrations by artist Chris Burnham, Who Can Save Us Now? offers a vibrant, funny, and truly unusual array of characters and their stories. |

Today $38.39 Galaxie 500's debut doesn't merely live up to the sweet promise of the band's debut single "Tugboat," Today's final song, but almost without trying becomes its own gently powerful touchstone. While the influences are clear -- third album Velvet Underground, early non-dance New Order, psychedelic haze and fuzz thanks to the reverb Kramer piled on as producer -- the resulting brew easily stands on its own. By never feeling the need to conventionally rock out, the Krukowski/Yang rhythm section comes up with its own brand of intensity. Sometimes the two are persistently skipping along without Krukowski having to bash the hell out of the drums (the downright delightful "Oblivious" is a good example), other times they simply play it soft and slow. Meanwhile, Wareham's low-key chiming and slightly lost, forlorn singing, at places wry and whimsical, often achingly sad, forms the perfect counterpoint to the songs' paces, feeling like a gauzy dream. When he comes up with his own brand of electric guitar heroics, it's very much in the Lou Reed and such descendants vein of less being more, setting the moods via strumming and understated but strong soloing. One particular Descendant gets honored with a cover version: Jonathan Richman, whose "Don't Let Our Youth Go to Waste" is turned into a deceptively calm epic, with marvelous playing by all three members. It's easier to lose oneself in the flow of the sound rather than worry about any deep meaning, making the stronger images that come to the fore all that more entertaining, like "watching all the people fall to pieces" in "Parking Lot." "Tugboat" itself, meanwhile, remains as wonderful as ever, a cascading confession of love at the expense of everything else, somehow mournful and triumphant all at once. Later CD versions included the "Tugboat" B-side, "King of Spain." ~ Ned Raggett, Rovi Performers: Dean Wareham - Vocals, Guitar; Naomi Yang - Bass |

Dethroning the King $18.99 The amazing true story behind the siege of America's favorite beer company How did InBev, a Belgian company controlled by Brazilians, take over one of America's most beloved brands after barely a whimper of a fight? Timing, and some unexpected help from powerful members of the Busch dynasty, the very family that had run the company for more than a century. In Dethroning the King , the award-winning financial journalist who led coverage of the takeover for the Financial Times details how the drama that unfolded at Anheuser-Busch in 2008 went largely unreported as the world tumbled into a global economic crisis second only to the Great Depression. Today, as the dust settles, questions are being asked about how the "King of Beers" was so easily captured by a foreign corporation, and whether the company's fall mirrors America's dwindling financial and political dominance. Discusses how the takeover of Anheuser-Busch will be seen as a defining moment in U.S. business history Reveals the critical missteps taken by the Busch family and the Anheuser-Busch board Argues that Anheuser-Busch had a chance to save itself from InBev's clutches, but strong forces behind the scenes forced it to capitulate From the very heart of America's heartland to the European continent to Brazil, Dethroning the King is the ultimate corporate caper and a fascinating case study that's both wide-reaching and profound. |

Save the World $13.59 As the ‘70s wore on, British glam rockers Geordie were looking less like contenders and more like pretenders with each passing day. Their first two albums had yielded no certifiable hits, and thus the early promise they'd shown had been gradually overshadowed by accusations that they were nothing more than a second-rate Slade. So, needless to say, the pressure was on as the quartet prepared to release its third studio long-player -- the falsely confident of named Save the World -- in 1976, which may well explain why its songs pointed in several distinct directions. Opening gambit "Mama's Gonna Take You Home" (previously a minor hit for Jericho) flexes some bluesy hard rock muscle, but then the horns-adorned "She's a Teaser" brings Geordie back, smack-dab, into the glam rock sweet spot, and the fact that both directions work on some levels but fail to wow completely pretty much says it all about the band's tricky predicament. This predicament is only exacerbated, later on, by similarly opposed cuts like "She's a Lady" and "Ride on Baby," the title track, and "We're All Right Now," making for a creative stalemate where neither persuasion comes out victorious. And when the lads attempt to diversify with radical fare like "I Cried Today" -- some kind of comedy reggae pastiche -- they really fall flat on their faces, totally failing to bother the charts for all their efforts. Apparently, these diminishing returns were more than singer Brian Johnson could stand, and he quit to pursue a doomed solo career soon after the album's release (only to fail at that and wind up working in garage until AC/DC came knocking). And Geordie, alas, were obviously in no condition to save the world if they couldn't even save themselves. ~ Eduardo Rivadavia, Rovi |

A King's Ransom $3.98 The author of five bestselling novels, including Under Cover of Darkness and The Pardon, James Grippando writes compulsively readable thrillers that could be drawn from today's headlines, only better. Now his trademark gifts are wonderfully demonstrated in a taut new tale of intrigue that will keep you guessing to the final, breathtaking scene. Just two years out of law school, Nick Rey is on the career fast track at a hot Miami law firm when he is suddenly plunged headfirst into a dangerous bid to save his father. Matthew Rey has been kidnapped while on business in Columbia's exotic port city of Cartagena. The ransom demand of three million dollars is far more than the Rey family can ever hope to raise. Fortunately, Matthew had purchased an insurance policy to protect against just such a threat. Unfortunately, the kidnappers seem to know all about the policy, and the insurance company, suspecting fraud, is refusing to pay out. With nowhere to turn, Nick links up with Alex, a beautiful, street-smart woman who may be the only person capable of negotiating with Matthew's abductors. But Nick soon discovers that the gravest dangers to him and his family are not the kidnappers and their guns, but the men in suits: lawyers, to be exact, at a powerful firm with something to hide, and they will stop at nothing to keep Nick from unleashing the truth. |
