Choosing the Right Sofa for Your Space and Lifestyle

Purchasing a sofa or Couch Set for your apartment or house is a big investment.  It is also an investment that will last for many years, depending on how long you typically buy new furniture.  If it is your first apartment and you are low on furniture funds then you want to make sure that the furniture you buy will work with your space and will be economical.

One of the first things you should consider is the material of the couch that you are planning to purchase.  There are a lot of different types of material used for couches nowadays. These include leather, microfiber, velvet, and woven fabrics.

If you live in a busy household or own a pet, then you may opt for fabric that is more durable, like microfiber, rather than more delicate fabrics that may wear out over time, such as velvet.  In addition to the type of fabric that you choose for your sofa, you should consider how easy or difficult the fabric will be to clean.

Heavily woven fabrics may be more difficult to clean than leather or microfiber material.  Some sofas come with stain protection, so you may want to speak to the furniture salesperson for more information about your options if you are concerned about staining and methods of cleaning.

Also, keep in mind that color will play a contributing factor in choosing your sofa.  It may be tempting to choose a trendy sofa color, like orange or purple, but will the color still be appealing to you years down the road?  If you know that you will likely be replacing the Sofa Set in a few years, then what do you think the resell value would be for such a trendy color?

There are other ways to dress up a sofa to add more style, such as throw pillows, so if you think that a more muted color would fetch more money come resell time, then consider investing in some cool pillows that will give your sofa a more modern polish.

The size of the sofa will also be a big factor in determining what type of sofa you should get.  Sofas can be small, such as a Love Seat, which typically fits about two people, to a sprawling sectional, that may come with a chaise or other features.  The space you have available will be the main factor in determining the size you should consider.

Bring a measuring tape to the furniture store when shopping, and have ready the measurements of your available space.  When measuring the space that you have available, make sure that you take into consideration any End Tables, bookcases, reading chairs, and other space constraints, this will prevent you from buying a sofa that takes up too much of your space real estate.

Special features are another option to consider when looking into sofas.  If you typically have overnight guests and do not have a spare bedroom, then you may opt for a Sofa Bed, which is essentially a couch that can fold out into a full-size or queen Size Bed.  Another option for those who have guests over frequently are futons.  Futons can be folded up to provide a couch or down and turned into a bed for guests.  Futons are usually less expensive than a sofa bed and may be a great option for those on a limited budget.
