What do you expect to see in a kitchen, arts and crafts? The writings of John Ruskin influenced the movement. Ruskin said the conviction that art provided an understanding of the nature and rejected mechanization and standardization. He advocated the value of a relationship between the worker and the natural environment. At that time, industrialization was destroyed in the world of craftsmanship.

With this, the style became more straightforward. The decoration was limited, especially if it was unnecessary. Patterns imitated the British flora and fauna. Architects drew on the vernacular of a design area. Many architects were influenced by the traditions of the British countryside. Designers intensified to meet the demand and began hosting workshops revive old crafts.

The Arts and Crafts style also resulted the style of a reaction against things shown at the Universal Exhibition of 1851. This exhibition took place in the Crystal Palace in England and was display examples of the latest technology developed in the Industrial Revolution. The Great Exhibition of 1851 had over 14,000 exhibitors from around the world. Artists, philosophers and writers critical of styles displayed, indicating that it was too ornamental. The art historian Nikolaus Pevsner even said, showed the Great Exhibition "vulgarity in detail."

With all this combined, it was not long before the arts and Crafts ideals were influencing the architecture, sculpture, painting, illustration, book making, photography, interior design and decorative arts decorative arts including furniture, woodwork, stained glass, leather, lace, embroidery, carpet, jewelry and silverware, enamelling and ceramics.
