Modern Office Desks
Technology – mainly computers - has significantly changed the way we work. Therefore, our office environment has had to adapt too, and this includes our chairs, workstations and office desks. At first glance, modern office desks might look the same as any desk from the preceding 20th century. Whilst structurally, this might be true, modern office desks have some subtle design changes that make them much more suited to the contemporary mode of working.
So what are these ‘subtle' changes, exactly?
As work-placed technology has changed and evolved, the computer has become central to the way most office workers go about their daily business. There are a whole array of electronic devices to aid communication, interaction and general day-to-day dealings. And although wireless technology is becoming more popular, for now more devices means more wires. The average modern office desk is home to a plethora of wires, plugs, and ports, and as such the best office desks accommodate these.
Holes for wires, such as ‘desk grommets', are often a feature of modern office desks. These have optional ‘lids', so that the holes can be open to accommodate wires, or closed if not required. Some office desks may also have a dedicated plug socket area, so that sockets can be firmly attached into the desk. This is common in offices where hot desking is frequent.
Modern office desks are also often designed to match workplace ergonomics. This area of biomechanics and engineering is becoming increasingly important as people spend more and more time seated at their work desks. Modern office desks should not only allow for ample space for desk and work equipment, but they must also be adjustable to suit the desk user and the user's desk chair. In fact, it's not uncommon for modern office desks to come as a complete set with ergonomic chairs, to help people work in a safe and healthy environment.
The desk itself may be curved, straight or a corner desk and the suitability of each of these depend on the work being carried out on the desk, the office layout, and of course, the personal taste of person responsible for the office interior design scheme!
Another feature of modern office desks is the fact that they tend to come with mobile draw pedestals, rather than fixed draw pedestals. This is in part due to ergonomics and individual need, as well as enabling more flexible office and home office layouts.
Materials wise, modern office desks aren't significantly different from their predecessors – wood, MDF and glass desks are all still common materials, with matte, gloss or frosted plastics and glass still regarded as the defining ‘modern' look. However, where some desks used to be coated in melamine, contemporary office desks tend to be foiled wrapped, for increased durability against daily wear and tear.

One of the later Spencer Tracy-Katharine Hepburn matchups, this time pitting efficiency expert--sorry, that's "methods engineer"--Richard Sumner (Tracy) against TV-network research whiz Bunny Watson (Hepburn) over adding a new-fangled computer--again, sorry, that's "electronic brain"--to her department, thereby threatening her and her colleagues' livelihoods. Gig Young appears as Bunny's beau, an ambitious network executive who strings her along and becomes apoplectic at the idea that she doesn't need him. But as always, it's Hepburn and Tracy's bickering-flirting that makes this such a winning enterprise--a lunch date that turns into an interrogation and their sly repartee during a Christmas party are a couple of the movie's hilarious highlights.
