Dictionary of Paul and His Letters: A Compendium of Contempoary Biblical Scholarship

$42.98

The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters is a one-of-a-kind reference work. Following the format of its hightly successful companion volume, the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels, this Dictionary is designed to bring students, teachers, ministers and laypople abreast the established conclusions and significant recent developments in Pauline scholarship. No other single reference work presents as much information focused exclusively on Pauline theology, literature, background and scholarship. In a field that recently has undergone significant shirts in perspective, the Dictionary of Paul and His Letters offers a summa of Paul and Pauline studies. In-depth articles focus on individual theological themes (such as law, resurrection and Son of God), broad theological topics (such as Christology, eschatology and the death of Christ), methods of interpretation (such as rhetorical criticism and social-scientific approaches), background topics (such as apocalypticism, Hellenism and Qumran) and various other subjects specifically related to the scholarly study of Pauline theology and literature (such as early catholicism, the center of Paul's theology, and Paul and his interpreters since F. C. Baur). Separate articles are also devoted to each of the Pauline letters to hermeneutics and to preaching Paul today. The Dictionary of Paul and His Letters takes its place alongside the Dictionary of Jesus and the Gospels in presenting the fruit of evangelical New Testament scholarship at the end of the twentieth century--commited to the authority of Scripture, utilizing the best of critical methods, and maintaining dialogue with contemporary scholarship and challenges facing the church.

Extra/Ordinary: Craft and Contempoary Art

Extra/Ordinary: Craft and Contempoary Art

$95.48

Contemporary artists such as Ghada Amer and Clare Twomey have gained international reputations for work that transforms "ordinary" craft media and processes into extraordinary conceptual art, from Amer's monumental stitched paintings to Twomey's large, ceramics-based installations. Despite the amount of attention that curators and gallery owners have paid to these and many other conceptual artists who incorporate craft into their work, few art critics or scholars have explored the historical or conceptual significance of craft in contemporary art. "Extra/Ordinary" takes up that task. Reflecting on what craft has come to mean in recent decades, artists, critics, curators, and scholars develop theories of craft in relation to art, chronicle how "fine art" institutions understand and exhibit craft media, and offer accounts of activist crafting, or craftivism. Some contributors describe generational and institutional changes underway, while others signal new directions for scholarship, considering craft in relation to queer theory, masculinity, and science. Encompassing quilts, ceramics, letterpress books, wallpaper, and textiles, and moving from well-known museums, to home workshops, to political protests, "Extra/Ordinary" is an eclectic introduction to the "craft culture" referenced and celebrated by artists promoting new ways of thinking about the role of craft in contemporary art.

Each volume of the Departure Lounge series, put together by the Petrol subsidiary of EMI, compiles a mildly pleasant mixture of music geared toward the background, much of which is electronic-based, sample-heavy, and provided by a cast that is mostly unknown. Few of the selections are stimulating, but the series as a whole is at least effective in setting a relaxed mood. Notable tracks on Departure Lounge: Lounge (apparently they ran out of ideas for subtitles) include Ulrich Schnauss' "Knuddlemaus" (one of the best on the series), Arkestra One's "Filling It with Sound," Coralie Clément's "Samba de Com Coeur Qui Bat," and Laroca's "Sinbad." ~ Andy Kellman, Rovi Performers: Richard Bridge - Sequencing

Astro Lounge

Astro Lounge

Based on their infectious summer single "Walking on the Sun," it was easy to dismiss Smash Mouth as a one-hit wonder, since it was hard to believe that they'd be able to top that sun-kissed delight that was easily the highlight of their debut, Fush Yu Mang. Perhaps that's why their second record, Astro Lounge, feels like such a surprise, since it carries through on the promise of "Walking on the Sun." Like Sugar Ray -- a fellow veteran of the ska-punk underworld who delivered a follow-up that owed more to melodic pop and new wave than its hit predecessor -- Smash Mouth have created an album that is unabashedly fun, catchy, and lightweight, the ideal music for a car radio or a day at the beach. It's true that nothing on Astro Lounge is as immediately grabbing as "Walking on the Sun," but every song shares the same party-ready mentality and irresistible, trashy AM-radio vibe. No, nothing on Astro Lounge is particularly deep, but it's all good fun and it never disappoints -- which is quite a remarkable feat, since one-hit wonders rarely deliver a second album that betters their first. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi Performers: Eric Valentine - Vibraphone, Keyboards; Greg Camp - Vocals, Guitar; John Gove - Trombone; Kevin Coleman - Drums; Michael Klooster - Keyboards; Paul DeLisle - Vocals, Bass; Steve Harwell - Vocals

Trees Lounge

Trees Lounge

Rated: RSynopsis: Character actor Steve Buscemi made his debut as a writer and director with this serio-comic tale of a guy who is going through something but doesn't know just what it is. Tommy is a 31-year-old auto mechanic who lost his last job after "borrowing" $1500 from the cash register and heading to Atlantic City, where he wasted no time in losing it all at the tables. The fact that he can't get his own car to run isn't impressing any prospective employers, so Tommy spends much of his time at the Trees Lounge, a local watering hole (Tommy conveniently lives in an apartment upstairs). Eventually Tommy lands some work driving an ice cream truck and becomes reacquainted with his niece, Debbie (Chloe Sevigny), who has just turned 17. When they half-heartedly fall into a romance, it's just one more thing for Tommy to be confused about. Buscemi draws upon a rich cast of supporitng actors, including Elizabeth Bracco, Anthony LaPaglia, Carol Kane, Debi Mazar, Samuel L. Jackson, and Mimi Rogers. Chicago Sun-Times1/2Trees Lounge doesn't paint a depressing portrait of Tommy, just a realistic one. In the Guru Lounge

In the Guru Lounge

$14.38

In the Guru Lounge is a brand-spanking new studio album by Guru Guru, and what a strange creature it is. It features 14 new tracks with a lineup that includes drummer Mani Neumeier, guitarist and reedist Roland Schaeffer, Luigi Archetti on guitar, and bassist Peter Kühmstedt. Everybody in this band sings. There are also a number of guest appearances here, including Hans Reffert on guitar and lap steel, and a pair of vocalists: Lisa Kraus sings on "Cool Baby" and "At the Guru Lounge," and Etsuko Watanabe sings on "Tokyo Girl" (the strange and beautiful opening track) and "Bo Altai." Here elements of funk, slide guitar blues, space rock, lounge music, warped torch songs, and (of course) spaced-out Krautrock weave and wend, move and swirl around the mix. These folks take their camp seriously and it feels like it. This is nearly indescribable music, which is indeed a compliment. Song structures juxtapose against a serious need to improvise and stretch -- give a listen to "Bo Altai" and "Pow Wow" during the album's first half, where free jazz, funk, Native American-styled chant, and Delta blues beat each other into submission and the music gets all the wilder as a result. The second half of this set is devoted to the seven-part "Guru Lounge Suite." This is the place where time ceases to matter and space is the place, though it is also held within the tension of these tunes. On part one, "Cool, Baby," saxophones and slippery laid-back funk grooves shimmer and whisper as wordless vocals, Indian stringed instruments, and various percussion elements find their way into the mix, easing their way in before the suite explodes into full-blown jazzed-up Krautrock excess with "Expressions." The tribute to Rahsaan Roland Kirk ("Kirk It, Roland") is one of the set's finer moments, with a loose and spooky funk groove driving the cut into oblivion before skronk guitars paint the spaces and the tempo picks up into a blur as the saxophones bleat and the vocalist tries to keep up. Ultimately, this is a recording that gives up its secrets slowly, but the effort to listen and find the linear path through In the Guru Lounge is a rewarding one. Comparing this recording to Guru Guru's older work isn't fair. This needs to be taken for what it is, and as such, it's a fine and labyrinthine listen. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Hans Reffert - Lap Steel Guitar, Vocals, Guitar; Lisa Kraus - Vocals; Luigi Archetti - Guitar, Vocals; Mani Neumeier - Roland Synthesizer, Percussion, Vocals; Peter Kuhmstedt - Vocals, Bass;

The Ultra Lounge

The Ultra Lounge

Water Music's (not to be confused with Water Records) double-disc Ultra Lounge comp is pretty much standard issue, but there are some truly fun moments here and nothing whatsoever is offensive (how often can you say that about a double-disc electronica compilation?).There is ambient and midtempo jazz house here as well downtempo, chillout, and minimal techno, to name a few of the styles, and nothing here really grooves above a summery simmer. Lemon Jelly's "95 A.K.A. Make Things Right" is a nice easy way to start things off with its lush textures and multidimensional atmospherics; Vanessa Daou's (when was the last time you heard that name?) "Passed" is beautiful in this context, as is Nitin Sawhney's shimmery "Sunset." Blue Smitty's remix of Lawrence Welk's read of "Blue Velvet" is strictly outer space groove. Jens Buchert's wildly exotic "Mélange Eléctrique" with its doussn'gouni loop is a great touch. Disc two starts off a little predictably with "Moods," a jazz house track full of a Milt Jackson vibraphone loop, but Tosca's spaced-out backdoor move on "Rondo Acapricio," digs the second disc into the tapestry well, as does the Thievery Corporation's space-and-rhythm remix of Bebel Gilberto's "Cada Beijo." The slippery futuristic electro-jazz-funk of Lemongrass' (Roland Voss) "Sync It Up to Love," is a left turn, but a good one, with his female vocalist doing her best Ruth Copeland. The sheer Andalusian/Gypsy feel of Andrew Kremer's and Mariana Murdocco's "Vuelvo" is almost a scene stealer. There is something here for almost anyone in the ultra lounge frame of mind here. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
