Make Dining Room Furniture Do Double Duty
If you have small home, or if you have a dining room/Living Room combination, then it is always a great thing when you can find furniture that is multifunctional for your space. This way you can free up some much needed floor space in your tight quarters making the room more comfortable and functional. The dining room is one of the best spaces for double duty furniture.
Adjustable Table
As you are considering table styles for your dining room, consider one that can expand. Having an adjustable dining Room Table is very handy, because if you are like most families, you will normally need a smaller Dining Table for your immediate family, but on the few occasions when you're entertaining a larger group, you will need the extra table space. Simply adding the removable leaf sections back into your table gives you that additional space. Remember that adding a leaf section to your table will increase it in size, so make sure that you have a table cloth that fits each dimension of your table. For example, if you have two table inserts, make sure that you have a proper table covering for the mid-size as well as the largest size dimension of your table.
Shelving
If you include some low shelving in your dining room, it can be multifunctional as well as attractive. You can add some of your hardbound cookbooks to the shelves for interest, and you can display some of your favorite crockery. You can place a basket with table linens on the shelf so that they are always close at hand, and you can add a candle arrangement to the shelves which are not only beautiful, but they can provide ambient lighting as well.
Storage Bench
In any room of your home a storage bench is always happy to serve several functions, and it fits beautifully into the dining room. You can tuck it into a corner, against a wall or at the table, and it offers you a comfortable place to sit. When you open the top of it you will also find ample room for storage. You can keep table linens, large serving pieces or any manner of things in a storage bench. You can also use it to store all of your holiday decorations, so that they are always close at hand, and you leave your closet space free for other storage needs. A storage bench can also work wonderfully well as a window seat adding a little bit of Old World charm to your dining area.
Small Chest
By adding a chest of drawers to your dining space, you can use it as a buffet and it has abundant storage in the drawers beneath. You can store linen, silverware and serving platters out of sight, yet you can keep them handy for when you need to use them. Using a chest of drawers can be a charming and inexpensive hutch for your dining room space. You can find a used dresser in just about any style at your local thrift store and simply mount floating shelves above it to display your crockery. Then you'll have a fully functional and affordable hutch.
