Some people dream of the perfect marriage, or the perfect children, or even a perfect career, but I dreamed of the perfect dog. I wanted a dog that loved me unconditionally, as only a dog can do.

Elvis was a little black and tan creature, very kissey and lovey from the very beginning. I had always wanted a dachshund, and to me he was everything I had been missing in my life. As a pup, he was stuck to me like glue from the very start, and he had the most adoring way that he looked up at me saying, "Fix it mommy!" We were inseparable. He was so beautiful.

If a pine needle got stuck on his foot, he'd lift it up and refuse to move until you removed the offending object. He did the same thing if he got cold in the snow, wanting to be picked up and carried inside. He used to whine, bark and do a little need-dance at the pizza box, the Thanksgiving turkey or Christmas ham, and, quite ridiculously, deer. He loved to hunt for bullfrogs. We used to call him a "Drama Queen" because he was so over-the-top demanding.

Elvis was a poorly bred tweenie at 11.5 pounds. Despite his beauty, he had each and every horrible, dachshund, genetic trait that caused his back to fail him at age 2 and then again at age 4. He should have been bionic, considering the money spent on him and two surgeries without question, but it was not meant to be. The last veterinary analysis informed us that he had a total of 9 bad areas in his spine, ready to herniate at any time, and bone spurs.

He was no longer a surgical candidate because after the second surgery, he developed a heart murmur and an enlarged heart and lungs. He was just 5 years old. He was also incontinent and weak on his right side.

Mommy couldn't fix it, although she prayed very hard and held him very close.

Still, Elvis loved life. He wanted cuddles and pets and to sleep in the big bed. He always wanted to look for mice in the yard, tear up his toys to get the squeeker out, and lick up inside your sinuses. He waited impatiently for mealtimes. He was always so excited when he saw a shopping bag because he knew there would be something either squeaky or tasty in it just for him. He was such a happy little thing.

He was bent and twisted in the end, roached like a Halloween cat, and twisted to the right. He did not get around very well with the heart murmur anymore, would rather sleep in his comfy bed or on my lap than to walk around the yard. The vet told us what to look for in terms of coronary failure.

When he herniated for the third time part of me died. I sat up with him, held him close all night long. I felt like my eyes would fall out of my head from crying. Elvis told me it was time for him to go. He did not want to fight anymore. So, in the morning, we helped him go to the Rainbow Bridge, and I held in my own arms as he passed. It was the hardest thing that I have ever been called upon to do.

Elvis was beloved. He was like an extension of myself. He was demanding and stubborn, sneaky and insistent. If I were to be reincarnated as a dog, I would hope to have his same beautiful personality. I would be proud to be like him and to have his tenacity to live, despite his many medical problems.

Elvis taught me so many things, living day-by-day being one of the most important. Each day was a perfect day to him as long as I was in it, and he would greet each day with the utmost optimism and enthusiasm. The love in his eyes was so pure and true. He was my pride and joy, and there will be no replacing him, ever. He was a special creature, mine alone, my sweetest baby.

Two years "After Elvis," I still shed tears because I miss him. It happens during those quiet hours when I feel lonely or misunderstood. It happens when I think about all the other dogs in similar conditions as he; dropped of at the vets, alongside a road or at a shelter by their owners because they did not want to deal with sickness or infirmary. They had not the backbone to provide the care that was necessary. Instead, they will let the shelter or "nature" decide if their own dog is to live or die because they have not the moral fiber to do so.

When you adopt or take in a dog or puppy, you take him in for his entire life. It is somewhat like a marriage, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer. A dog is a very sensitive creature that responds to the owners every need and emotion with complete abandon. If your dog becomes lame, paralyzed, blind or cancerous, that dog is still YOUR dog, despite the throw away mentality of our American society. That dog worships YOU, and may you then be able to rise to the occasion to care for it properly.

Too often those poor beasts just conveniently "run away."

Like many others, we never knew how dachshunds were predisposed to back problems and his breeder never said a word of caution. We were ignorant uninformed people. We allowed him free run of the house, he was allowed on furniture, and he ran up and down stairs. It is still very hard to deal with the results of our indiscretion.

In order to make something good out of this experience, I joined Coast to Coast Dachshund Rescue. (http://www.c2cdr.org) It is in his memory that I help inform people, do home inspections, reference checks, transport and take in owner surrenders in the Western PA area. His memory is part of my heart, and this endeavor helps to bring his memory closer to me as time goes by. I know far too much about spinal injury, but that can benefit other people and other dogs. It is through helping others that I try to find that part of me that died with him.

Elvis was born from a backyard breeding on December 19, 1998. Elvis died on December 21, 2004.
