You hear the sounds of chatting and laughing-the room is abuzz... Or maybe it's the 1950s. In the 1950s, post-war recovery was in full swing. Elegant entertaining was back in vogue. The cocktail party, popularized during the 1920s, influenced fashion, furniture and interior design in the 1950s. When it was introduced in mid-century, the "Cocktail Table" was a trendy term to describe the long, low table that sat in front of a sofa. While people in many parts of the country call this a "Coffee Table," the cocktail table has entered our vocabulary and our design sense. Beginning with an introductory arrangement of Oliver Nelson's up-tempo "Interlude," the disc is then given over to a seven-part "Blue Suite" composed and arranged by Belden. Smulyan leads the proceedings on baritone sax, joined by Bill Charlap on piano, Christian McBride on bass, and Kenny Washington on drums, along with four trumpets, three trombones, two French horns, and a tuba. Most of these brass players are Smulyan's fellow members in the historic Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. An extended meditation on the blues in all its variety, the suite features Smulyan's virtuosic, expressive bari playing and fine solos from trumpeters Scott Wendholt and Greg Gisbert, French horn player John Clark, tubist Bob Stewart, and trombonist John Mosca. To hear the blues genesis of some of these compositions -- especially "Blues in My Neighborhood," "Charleston Blue," and "Blues Gentility" -- requires a careful ear. "Blue Speed" and "Blue Stomp," in contrast, are more straightforward blowing vehicles. Voodoo Suite/Exotic Suite of the Americas $19.66 The pairing of Perez Prado's two orchestral tone poems on one CD is something of an occasion to celebrate. Recorded seven years apart, The Voodoo Suite and The Exotic Suite of the Americas are the defining moments in Prado's long career as king of the mambo. Though The Voodoo Suite, with its larger-than-life orchestra -- six saxophones, three trombones, seven drummers, six trumpets, and more -- was equal parts a Latin dance band and a jazz orchestra, its tight charts by Shorty Rogers made it a dramatic beast to wrestle and a sublime one to listen to. For all the critics who had discussed Prado in the derogatory, The Voodoo Suite gave them something to listen to, because here was the first popular attempt at the marriage of Cuban, African, and jazz elementals ever attempted in a work that was essentially for the general populace a mood record. The loping horn arrangements, bluesy solos, and hypnotic drumming took it outside the realm of mood music and placed it squarely into the camp of progressive big band jazz. To prove it was no fluke, the original album was rounded out with the other tracks that appear here from another session: "St. James Infirmary," "In the Mood," "I Can't Get Started," and others which burned the Latin jazz flame just as bright. On The Exotic Suite of the Americas, Prado took a decidedly more laid-back approach and made his score more cinematic in scope and tone. Relying deeply on textured strings and found-sound objects to accent the jazz orchestra, this is 16 minutes of pure, exotic ecstasy. And again, Prado, always wanting to round out his records and give the paying customer something to sink his butt into, offered mambo renditions of "Son of a Gun," "El Relicario," "Midnight in Jamaica," and more from another session later in 1962. The folks at Bear Family have done a fine job remastering the original tapes and assembling the greatest-ever statements by Prado. September Suite $12.78 Pianist and composer Amina Figarova was asleep in a Brooklyn apartment belonging to friends when the events of September 11, 2001 unfolded. As she moved about the city after the destruction of the World Trade Center, and later returned home to Rotterdam, a powerful documentary inspired her to create September Suite. The moody introduction, "Numb," is tinged with sadness; in it she utilizes her instrument to depict the carnage and the chaos of the crowds trying to get away or track down missing relatives. "Emptyness" has the cadence of a funeral march, blending Nico Schepers' mournfully voiced trumpet with Bart Platteau's flute. She opens her haunting "Photo Album" with unaccompanied piano, and the full sextet joins her as she depicts the survivors attempting to connect with their lost loved ones. The Survivor's Suite $40.79 One of the best recordings for Keith Jarrett's mid-'70s American quartet (whose style differed sharply from its European doppelgänger), Survivor's Suite opens with Jarrett's aching, breathy sigh on the bass recorder, evoking the sound of a horn somewhere across a great expanse of fog. Percussion soon punctuates the melodic line to give the opening a more spiritual, ritualistic feel, which is only the first of many mutations that this album will go through. Divided into two parts, entitled "Beginning" and "Conclusion," this suite effortlessly flows between its movements which range from fiery free jazz to open, meditative atmospheric pieces showing heavy input from indigenous musics to instrumental solos that owe a sylistic debt to the music of the previous decade. Jarrett has strong solos in both the first and second track, but his performances rise to the surface frequently to add warmth to the suite. The greatest contribution that he makes on this album, however, is as a composer, as its complex components seem to nestle together seamlessly again and again, even if the solos occasionally rapidly expand and contract with kinetic energy. As strong a hand as Jarrett has in this album, however, he definitely owes a debt to his supporting players, especially the passionate Dewey Redman and skilled Paul Motian, but Charlie Haden plays an important role in the execution of the suite as well, even if only to provide a skeleton to hang the more fluid elements on. Ocean Suite $12.78 Pianist/composer Steven Halpern performs some expansive works accompanied by the sound of ocean waves on Ocean Suite. However, as Halpern is widely recognized as a leader in the realm of "sound health," the true intention of this CD is to relax the listener.
