A Leather Sofa is an investment. It is not only hard wearing and durable, but a thing of beauty that you will enjoy for many years to come.
Leather is superior to fabric materials, because, it will not be easily torn or ripped, even along the seams, have you noticed how fabric furniture fades in a relatively short space of time? This is not the case with leather, when it is dyed the color is absorbed by the material, making it fade resistant. With modern techniques it will not crack and peel, rather it stretches, so retains its shape and doesn't sag.
With its distinct smell, you always know when you have entered a room with a leather sofa in it. With age fabric will show the tests of time, leather matures over time, giving it another advantage over fabrics. Easy to maintain, a damp cloth will remove most marks on leather, and there are endless creams that can be used to keep it supple. No need for chemical cleaning.
Because leather is a natural product each hide has its own unique distinctions, it is virtually impossible to get two sofas that will be identical in every way. Variations in grain, scars, and wrinkles all add to the character of a leather sofa.
What can be confusing when buying a new sofa is the different terms used to describe certain leather finishes.
Aniline leather derives its name from the type of dye used for its color. The translucent dyes are contained within Stainless Steel drums where the hides are soaked and tumbled. A hides natural markings and grain are not affected using this method; in fact hides from one piece can actually have variations in the depth of color because of the way in which the dye is absorbed. Because surface finishes are not applied in this process, these types of leather are more absorbent, and over time they develop a rich patina finish, adding natural beauty to your sofa.
Semi-aniline is the same as full but with an added step. To achieve a more uniform finish in the color the surface of the hide is micro-pigmented, and then a protective coating is applied to aid fade and soil resistance. With a wide range of colors to choose from, this type of finish exhibits the same sort of softness that comes with a full aniline finish.
The process that involves the buffing or light sanding of the leathers surface to achieve an even greater uniformity in grain is known as Corrected semi-aniline leather. The same dye process is used as for semi-aniline; the main difference is that some of the leathers softness is lost because of the buffing. Treated in this way the leather has greater soil, fade, and wear resistance.
There are 3 types of suspension that are used in leather sofas:
A drop in coil unit that is hand tied together creating a comfortably soft but supportive feel, and reduces the load on the sofas framework is known as an 8 way coil suspension system.
A sinuous spring system is Made From coils that are S shaped, these are attached by nails and clips to the framework. These are positioned from the front to the back in the seating area and from top to bottom in the backrest area. This system is durable and will provide a firmer support in your sofa.
Pocketed coils are in the seat cushions. These coil units are enclosed in a special fabric and are then welded together ultrasonically throughout the cushions. This system provides enhanced support and is very stable.
