Suite for Chocolate $27.19 Pianist Joe Bonner made a series of rewarding sets for the Danish SteepleChase label during 1979-88 without achieving all that much fame, despite his talent. This set teams the modal-oriented Bonner with vibraphonist Khan Jamal, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Leroy Lowe for six of his diverse originals, all of which display passion (either overtly or inwardly). Monk Suite $10.38 The Kronos Quartet, a very open-minded classical string quartet, caused a lot of eyebrows to be raised with this unusual set. They perform eight Thelonious Monk compositions and two Duke Ellington pieces that Monk had recorded. All of the notes played by the strings were written out in advance by arranger Tom Darter but the improvising bassist Ron Carter is a major asset on five of the selections which are placed in a "Monk Suite." In addition, the two Ellington numbers have the Kronos Quartet joined by bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Eddie Marshall. Fortunately, the string arrangements are very much in Monk's style, with many of the lines taken directly off of the pianist's recordings. The Beat Suite $13.58 Soprano saxophonist Steve Lacy's The Beat Suite is an ambitious attempt to set beat-era poetry by some of the genre's most iconic progenitors to Lacy's idiosyncratic jazz stylings. Featuring the vocals of Lacy's wife and longtime collaborator, Irene Aebi, the group also includes George Lewis adding counterpuntal touches on trombone, bassist Jean Jacques Avenel, and drummer John Betsch. While fans of such beat writers as William S. Burroughs, Robert Creeley, and Jack Kerouac may find this interesting, the real success of The Beat Suite rests largely in the listeners' interest in hearing Aebi. An acquired taste even by avant-garde standards, Aebi often sounds like a cross between Jessye Norman and Nico. Compositionally, the songs follow Lacy's serpentine, atonal logic often sounding something like Gerry Mulligan's pianoless quartet in bizzaro world. Thankfully, the poems are included in the liner notes, as it is sometimes hard to focus on them with all the jazz going on. Mediterranea Suite $21.59 Pianist Diego Spitaleri is one of Italy's fine if overlooked treasures. He is a musician of amazing dexterity and a keen sense of harmonic development as both a soloist and an arranger. While his compositional influences range from Ellington and Strayhorn to Stan Kenton and Miles Davis, his technical influences are those wonders of the keys such as Lennie Tristano, Mal Waldron, McCoy Tyner, and even Bobby Timmons. Tristano, with his high-flung sense of counterpoint and chromatic indulgence, is most prominent here, especially on "Rose," "Dottor P.C.," and "The Night of Flight." Ellington can be heard in Spitaleri's lyricism on the Duke's own "In a Sentimental Mood" and "Fragment for Duke," as Tyner makes his presence felt on the modalism of "Icarus" and the extended suspended chord voicings in "Mediterranean Suite." Of course none of this would make a whit of difference if Spitaleri hadn't created his own synthesis of these jazz images as both a composer and as an improviser. Like so many jazzers of his generation in Italy, melodicism is paramount to making something not only swing, but move beyond the realm of jazz itself. To this end, Spitaleri and his accompanists -- bassist Paolina Dalla Porta and drummer Paolo Mappa -- have dedicated themselves. Everything on this date flows like water down a stream, changing as it moves, eddying, whirling, and finally flowing freely once again until it encounters something else it needs to engage. This is jazz at its most elegant and ornate, but not in a florid way. The ornamentation Spitaleri layers into his music is the ornament of tradition as it evolves from one space intervallically to the next, mutating just enough to retain the stamp of the previous while fully engaging the next set of musical and linguistic criteria. In this way the soul of the music remains, and its heartbeat emerges fluidly in positively wondrous solos and group interplay. Akhenaten Suite $11.98 Trumpeter Roy Campbell has flown under the radar for quite a while as one of the truly underrated brass players in modern mainstream and creative improvised jazz. What will loft his rising further is in the hands of listeners and poll voters, but what makes him unique is the ability to carve his personal identity into each project, live it, embrace it, and make it a unified whole different from his previous efforts. This CD documents the world premiere of his Akhenaten Suite, presented at the 12th annual Vision Festival in New York City. It's a seven-part magnum opus, with bookended stand-alone pieces on either side of the four-segment "Pharaoh's Revenge." All throughout this live concert, violinist Billy Bang plays tandem melody lines with Campbell, rarely stepping outside that partnership. It's a fickle sonance that deserves close attention, very much in tune with each other's fragile but wondrous timbres. They also take quite a few liberties with extended solos, while vibraphonist Bryan Carrott adopts a subsidiary harmonic role. The Afrocentric spirit waltz "Akhenaten" starts the set with Campbell's splattery overblown harmonic horn bearing down over Bang's searching violin and the steady, churning drumming of Zen Matsuura. The closer, "Sunset of the Nile," is a perfectly titled and rendered closer, very similar to John Coltrane's work in the mid-'60s that straddles the line between Freddie Hubbard's "Little Sunflower" and Harold Land's epic "Pakistan" from his landmark LP Damisi, sporting a samba-driven bassline from Hilliard Greene. The suite proper, dedicated to the Pharaohs of Egypt circa 1350 B.C., starts with a free recorder and Sun Ra-type percussive statement across Bang's sighing violin, followed by a 4/4 modal desert caravan trek that is straightforward and not complex, and then another free episode sounding like birds of the Nile, with Greene's bowed bass and Campbell on the argol/arghul. The hard-charging finale expresses the wrath and ultimate vengeful exultation of the urgent, beautiful, and dutiful Pharaoh. The sound quality of this performance is a bit thin and sparse, but more volume cures this slight criticism. The jazz world is all too aware that Roy Campbell has a definitive statement within him, and though more interplay and development of themes are needed here, there is an overall good end result on this ambitious first outing of what could eventually wind up being his signature large composition. ~ Michael G. Canadiana Suite $46.39 The remarkable pianist Oscar Peterson had never been thought of that much as a composer, making this set of eight of his compositions a bit of a surprise when it was originally released. Now available on CD, Peterson's tribute to his native Canada includes several noteworthy pieces of which "Hogtown Blues" and "Wheatland" are best known. With his 1964 trio (featuring bassist Ray Brown and drummer Ed Thigpen), Peterson swings hard but often with sensitivity throughout the enjoyable set. ~ Scott Yanow, Rovi Performers: Ed Thigpen - Drums; Oscar Peterson - Piano; Ray Brown - Bass

Western Suite $33.59 In late 1957, jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and iconoclast Jimmy Giuffre broke up the original Jimmy Giuffre 3 with Ralph Pena and Jim Hall. In early 1958, for a recording session, he formed a new trio without a rhythm section. For the album Trav'lin' Light, his new trio included Hall on guitar and the underrated trombone giant Bob Brookmeyer. For a year, they gigged together up and down the West Coast and played summer festivals, recorded, and even played clubs in New York. They became a trio of adventurous musicians for whom form was not an obstacle to creativity. As the year wound down, Giuffre wanted to document the trio once more, sensing its life was coming to an end. He composed the four-movement "Western Suite" with the trio's strengths in mind, as a way of documenting how they had come together as a band during that year. The piece itself stands as a crowning achievement in a career that included discovering the talents of Steve Swallow and Paul Bley and making the truly revolutionary recording Free Fall for Columbia three years later. The roots of that thinking lie in this set. Jim Hall's playing was dark, funky, ambiguous, sounding like drums and voices all at the same time -- particularly in the fourth movement. Brookmeyer became the pace setter. His lines were played as stage settings for the other two players to dialogue and narrate against. Giuffre, ever the storyteller, advanced the improvisation angle and wrote his score so that each player had to stand on his own as part of the group; there were no comfort zones. Without a rhythm section, notions of interval, extensions, interludes, and so on were out the window. He himself played some of his most retrained yet adventurous solos in the confines of this trio and within the form of this suite. It swung like West Coast jazz, but felt as ambitious as Copland's Billy the Kid. The record is filled out with two other tunes, one of Eddie Durham's, "Topsy," and the final moment of mastery this band ever recorded, the already classic "Blue Monk." The easy stroll of the front line with Brookmeyer's trombone strutting New Orleans' style is in sharp contrast to Giuffre's clarinet playing. Which carries the bluesy melody through three harmonic changes before he solos and then plays three more. Hall keeps it all on track, and somehow the piece sounds very natural this way, though unlike "Monk," there are no edges here -- everything is rounded off. This is as solid as any of the earlier or later Jimmy Giuffre 3 records, and two notches above Trav'lin' Light in that it reveals a fully developed sense of the responsibilities, possibilities, and freedoms of reinventing jazz for the trio. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi Performers: Bob Brookmeyer - Trombone; Jim Hall - Guitar;

Smaller Chairs for the Early 1900s $11.19 Moneen's 2000 debut EP, Smaller Chairs for the Early 1900s, introduced the quirks and flourishes that would define their sound on their later albums, Theory of Harmonial Value and Are We Really Happy With Who We Are Right Now?. Urgent, high-pitched vocals, anthemic melodies, shifting time signatures, and intricately structured songcraft define the band's blend of emo and math rock, particularly on "How Many Other Girls Are There in the World Anyway?." "Wrath of the Donkey Remix" has so many parts that it could almost be a suite, and the way that all of the songs flow seamlessly into each other gives Smaller Chairs for the Early 1900s a consistency most bands can't reach on their first efforts (or ever, for that matter). However, this consistency becomes a little too samey in places. "The Passing of America" sounds so similar to the two songs before it that it feels a bit repetitive, but "This Year I've Had Enough" shows the kind of ambition and innovation that marked the best of Moneen's later work. Moving from layered, circular vocals to a surging chorus and then combining the two in unpredictable ways, the song is both of a piece, and yet distinctive from, the rest of the EP. Berg: Lyric Suite; Violin Concerto; Lulu-Suite $10.38 A mixed collection of pieces, performers, and recordings, this two-disc set of music by Alban Berg lacks cogency -- chronologically, it starts in the middle, jumps forward to the end, and then circles back for the beginning -- consistency -- the performances range from the magnificent Alban Berg Quartet to the mediocre Simon Rattle -- and comprehensiveness -- while the Berg fan is of course grateful for everything here, the fan is also inevitably disappointed by all that is not here: a string quartet, a chamber concerto, a concert aria, several short piano pieces, and many, many songs are missing along with his two great operas (except, that is, as excerpts). But despite these flaws, this two-disc set has one quality that more than makes up for all it lacks: it has Berg's music on it, music that, although infinitely the most attractive and accessible of the Second Viennese School, is still horribly neglected in performance and recording. Thus, even hearing Berg's massive and monumental Drei Orchester Stücke, his tragic and transcendent Violin Concerto, his sexy and scary Lulu Suite, his romantic and retrogressive Sieben frühe Lieder, his ardent and impulsive Piano Sonata, his weird and wacky Vier Stücke for clarinet and piano, his brief but heartbreaking Act III Interlude from Wozzeck, and his passionate and despairing Lyric Suite for string quartet is a wonderful thing, and anyone who loves Berg's music -- and that should include anyone who loves the music of Mahler and Strauss -- will be invariably drawn to this collection.
