Quick Tips for Buying Zebra Skins Rugs

If you are looking for an interesting decorative rug for your home, a zebra skin rug may be a great piece to purchase. Real zebra skin rugs come from Africa and can often be purchased online. Be certain that the one you are purchasing is a Burchell zebra skin.

Unlike some other zebras, a Burchell zebra is not an endangered or threatened species. Also, it is approved by the U.S. for importation. A zebra rug is usually around 8' from the head to the end of the back feet and 6' across the leg expanse. The size will vary up to a foot in each direction based upon the animal size.

Zebra skin rugs range in price from $1500 to $2300. Your budget will determine what grade of rug you will be able to afford.  Most companies offer four grades: Trophy, Grade A, Grade B, and Grade C. The grade is determined by how many scars or blemishes occur on the rug.

Scars and blemishes may occur naturally or they may happen during the production process. Trophy grade, the highest quality available, will have little to no marks. Grade C, will have more marks, but you shouldn't discount these as unworthy of buying. They are much cheaper and can still be quite striking.

The color of the rug you order will obviously be black and white. You can also add a felt lining if you wish. A felt lining and border should cost around $150 and should match the colors on the top of your rug.

Some companies include the lining in the price. When looking at zebra skin rugs, you may also consider looking at other zebra skin decorative products. Some of the more common items are pillows, chairs and benches. You may even wish to order a zebra skin without the lining and use it as furniture upholstery.

Taking care of zebra skin rugs is fairly easy. The main thing is to avoid water. Getting your rug wet will cause it to shrink. For simple cleaning you can simply shake the rug. If you choose to vacuum it, be sure to turn off the rotation brushes on your vacuum.

If there is a stain, you can treat it with a mild carpet or upholstery cleaner. Be sure to avoid harsh chemicals. Your rug will also need to be kept out of direct sunlight that may fade or age it. And of course, be sure to keep it away from heat. Proper care should keep your rug beautiful for years to come.
