General Rules That Apply to Home Accents

 

Homes are filled with furniture to allow you and your family a place to sit in the mornings before you day begins, books and movies to fill your days and comfortable beds to sleep on. Wall Art is added to help your home become a little more cozy and to show your personality. Often times wall art will begin conversations, whether they be about what a picture may remind you of or a story you might make up in your head.

Just as these things allow your house to become a home, the small details in home accents are also a huge part. Home accents may be found in the framing of art work or the clock that sits on the bookcases to the Coat Rack in the entryway.

When picking out home accents, there are a few general rules to follow:

*Keep your pieces limited to 3 per shelf depending on the size of your bookcases. The times when this rule would not apply is when you have chosen a larger piece, say an 8x10 Picture Frame that lays horizontal. Maybe only one other small piece on the shelf. You never want to hide the reason you bought the shelves which are the books. You still need to be able to access them.

 

*Not everything has to match, but it should still go together. For example, if you have an ornate Cast Iron decorative candle holder you bought previously, instead of choosing a small crystal base for tapered candles, opt for the maroon candle holder with the thick quilted base.

 

*Not every wall must have furniture and wall art. If you tried to cover every bit of wall space, you would have a cramped room that would be hard to enjoy. When there is so much everywhere, your eye has a hard time concentrating on certain pieces. For example, if you bought an oil painting that you were very proud of, you wouldn’t want to hide it away in a corner among mirrors and plants. Leave your space open and inviting.

*You can make different styles work together. If you love flowers and flower prints and flower pictures and you only have big Wooden Furniture and a more Modern Style from your previous home but you can only afford a few pieces of wall art or home accents at a time or you don’t want to get crazy with the floral print, buy a few that you really like. In most cases, you can combine different styles. It may be slightly more difficult, but the end result can be very charming.

There is almost always a story behind interesting trinkets and purchases from vacations or simply who you were with when you bought it. Instead, they float, linger, and move in unexpected directions as they travel toward the journey's unpredictable end. Basho-Junghans is the best-known name here, and he performs two cuts, "A North Thuringian Raga" and "Smiling Penguins." On the latter piece he turns his guitar into a percussive instrument, evoking the barren, ice-packed landscape and the footsteps of hundreds of birds. Akiyama's "Time Between" is a 20-minute meditation that combines carefully chosen notes and quiet spaces. Bishop brings a haunting air to the program with the pensive closer, "Corpuscle," a dark piece with traditional Spanish themes embedded. Wooden Teeth $9.58 Florida quartet Mouse Fire aren't doing anything particularly new on their debut album Wooden Teeth, but they combine familiar elements in unexpected enough fashion to make the album an appealing listen regardless. Working off the basic template of the emo end of contemporary indie rock, Mouse Fire add smartly catchy pop hooks to songs like the vaguely psychedelic "Comes Around Goes Around." They also engage in a fondness for noisy experimental interludes like the brief, distortion-heavy freak-out "Mexican Weather," but even that 90-second song has a surprisingly memorable chorus underneath all the feedback. At the album's most blandly indie-by-numbers, such as "To Celebrate a Suicide" and the repetitive "Started a Fire," Mouse Fire sound more than a little like Minus the Bear, but singer Joey Bruce's better than average voice (he generally stays well clear of the usual emo whine), the regular addition of piano to the choppy guitar lines and bass-driven rhythms, and the generally high quality of the songwriting makes up for the album's occasional flaws. But in the case of Curse ov Dialect -- an Australian quintet (including DJ Paso Bionic) known almost as much for an insane on-stage wardrobe as for its collective rhyming skills -- the combination of backgrounds, ethnicities, and languages comes together with a strange and intermittent brilliance that is sometimes dazzling, sometimes merely baffling. For the former, check out the bassoon samples and flashy turntablism on "Word Up Forever," and the quirkily complicated "Renegades." For the latter, check out their clumsy attempt at waltz-time rapping on "Broken Feathers" and the maladroit lyrics on "Sticks and Stones" ("I don't blame children for having little consciousness/I can see it in their eyes, it's not real despise"). Things bounce back and forth between those two extremes until the very end of the album, when they take things out with a powerful one-two punch in the form of the dark grooves and sharp, almost corrosive politics of "Stop Sarisis" and "Letter to Athens." It's in the nature of this kind of experimentation to fail a considerable percentage of the time -- but that just makes the successes all the more thrilling.
